Day 1: Arrival in Athens & Acropolis Sunset

Day 3: The Road to Nafplio

Corinth Canal Photo Stop
Drive 1 hour west to the Corinth Canal. Stop at the footbridge to look down at the deep blue water slicing through the rock.
Nafplio & Palamidi Fortress
Arrive in Nafplio, often called Greece's most romantic town. Conquer the Palamidi Fortress (drive to the back gate to avoid the steps, or hike up for the challenge).
Arvanitia Coastal Walk
Take a boat to the Bourtzi sea castle, then walk the paved Arvanitia promenade that hugs the cliffs around the headland.
Day 4: Mystras & The Hidden Rock
Drive through the Spartan mountains
Sparta (Quick Stop)
Modern Sparta is quiet, but you can snap a photo with the statue of Leonidas before heading to the real highlight nearby: Mystras.
Explore Mystras
Explore the UNESCO site of Mystras, a fortified Byzantine ghost town cascading down a mountain. Visit the Palace of the Despots and ancient churches.
Arrival in Monemvasia
Drive to the coast to find 'The Rock.' Park outside and walk across the causeway into the medieval castle town where no cars are allowed.
Day 5: Drive to Ancient Olympia

Gytheio Coffee Stop
Depart Monemvasia and stop in Gytheio, a colorful port town with octopus drying in the sun. Perfect for a mid-morning coffee.
Tour Ancient Olympia
Arrive at the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Stand on the original starting line in the stadium and see the Temple of Zeus.
Village Dinner
Relax in the modern village of Olympia. Rest up early—tomorrow is a big driving day to the north.
Day 6: The Magic of Meteora
Drive North to Kalambaka (≈5 hrs). This is a single-day Meteora visit, so check which monasteries are open on your date: Great Meteoron is closed Tue, Varlaam Fri, and Holy Trinity Thu; before Apr 1, Great Meteoron also closes Wed+Thu and Varlaam also Tue+Wed.
Holy Trinity Monastery
After the drive north, head straight to the rocks. Visit Holy Trinity (featured in James Bond's 'For Your Eyes Only'). Prepare for stairs!
Varlaam Monastery
Continue to the Great Meteoron or Varlaam. Varlaam closes at 16:00 during the Apr 1–Oct 31 summer schedule, with last entry around 15:30. These active monasteries sit atop massive sandstone pillars. (Dress code: shoulders and knees covered).
Sunset at Psaropetra
End the day at the main observation deck (Psaropetra) to watch the sun dip behind the Pindos Mountains, casting the rocks in golden light.
Day 7: Drive to Athens & Fly to Crete
Transition Day: Mainland to Island
Return Drive to Athens
Depart Kalambaka for the drive back to Athens (approx 4 hrs). It's mostly highway, making for an easy cruise.
Flight to Heraklion
Return your car at Athens Airport. Hop on a short 50-minute flight to Heraklion, the capital of Crete.
Welcome to Crete
Check into your Heraklion hotel near Lion Square. Celebrate your arrival with raki and Cretan dakos at 'Peskesi' restaurant.
Day 8: Heraklion & The Hippie Caves
Pick up new rental car
Koules Fortress & Market
Walk the Venetian harbor wall to Koules Fortress. Grab a bougatsa (custard pie) at the famous Lions Square fountain.
Day Trip to Matala
Drive south to Matala Beach. Explore the man-made caves in the sandstone cliffs that were inhabited by hippies in the 60s (Joni Mitchell stayed here!).
Sunset at Ammoudara
Return north and catch the sunset at Ammoudara beach before heading back into Heraklion for dinner.
Day 9: Westward to Chania
Coastal drive & Gorges
Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfall
Drive west towards Rethymno. Detour slightly to see the Kourtaliotiko Gorge; you can hike down to where the river flows under an arched bridge.
Chania Old Town Check-in
Arrive in Chania, the jewel of Crete. Check into a boutique hotel in the pedestrian-only Old Town. Wander the maze of Venetian alleys.
Venetian Harbor Night Walk
Walk to the Egyptian Lighthouse at the harbor entrance. Enjoy fresh seafood at a waterfront taverna like 'Salis'.
Day 10: The Pink Sand Beaches
Full day beach adventure
Balos Lagoon
Visit the world-famous Balos Lagoon. Note: The road is dirt and rough (often excluded from insurance). Alternatively, drive to Kissamos port and take the 10 AM ferry.
Elafonisi Pink Sand
Head south to Elafonisi beach, famous for its pink sand. For a wilder experience, walk 10 minutes east to the cedar forest of Kedrodasos.
Falasarna Sunset
Watch the sun sink into the sea at Falasarna Beach on your way back to Chania. It offers one of the best sunsets on the island.
Day 11: Farewell Greece
Drive back to Heraklion & Fly
Early Drive East
Depart Chania early for the 2-hour drive back to Heraklion Airport. Enjoy the coastal views one last time.
Last Minute Souvenirs
If time permits before your flight, grab some Cretan honey or olive oil near the airport to take home.
Depart Heraklion

For an 11-day trip, fly Athens to Heraklion (~50 minutes) to protect your daylight hours. Take a ferry only if you have extra time and want the overnight cabin experience.
Should I drive in central Athens?
No. Park the rental car outside the inner ring and rely on taxis/Metro inside Athens. Traffic cameras issue steep fines for using bus lanes.
Is the dirt road to Balos Lagoon legal in rental cars?
Technically yes, but most companies exclude damage coverage. Go slow, keep tires inflated, and consider booking a boat transfer from Kissamos instead.
